On doing your own thing

Monday morning is as good a time as any to think about this. More and more people I know are dropping out of what they call the corporate race, to run to a race whose drummer only they can hear. What is this about doing your own thing? (I know, look who’s talking and all that… but this is about other people). Me, I think it is easy to stop and draw boundaries on so-much-and-no-more as an employee rather than as owner. In case of having your own business, where does work stop and life start? And so on…

My husband says the only way to succeed at your own thing is if you build something entirely new and path-breaking. Work your butt off, build a product and sell it off and live the rest of your life giving wisdom on how to do your own thing. But how many of us have managed to do that? Or how many of us even start out thinking of that? Building a company which is one more in the same space where there are a thousand others, what does it do for anyone? The other way to succeed is to be on your own – completely – and make it work purely basis the strength of your name and expertise… Not an easier option by any means, but far more lucrative, in all senses of the word.

Anyway, all this now and here because I came across Biz_Scene_India on twitter. This stream follows 1999 people, has 640 people following it – and has 3 updates so far. What am I missing here?

  1. It is a myth that being on one’s own is easier, it gives us more freedom, we aren’t under the diktat’s of a boss etc. It’s far tougher than being in an office and working for someone else.

The burden of having a business and being one’s own boss is far greater responsibility. We can save up as much money even by being in ordinary job in an office, if one is prudent about wealth management. Richness does not depend on the income alone but also on expenditure too.

Biz scene India is a puzzle.
