An evening at Lalbagh

Spotted these boards everywhere inside Lalbagh during a recent walk one rainy evening…

A Lalbagh evening

Reminded me of this definition of puritanism by Henry Mencken – the haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be happy. I mean, what are parks and open spaces for, if not for kids to run and play in – and there were security guards everywhere making sure that no kid was having any kind of fun on that very lovely evening…

And from a long time ago, some thought bubbles…

Bubbles in the air

…and some summer colours

More sunshine and cheer

  1. Perhaps it is a security measure against terror attacks? If you recall, a few years ago, Lumbini Park in Hyderabad was the scene of bomb blasts where many innocent people were killed. Maybe the security can be trained on how to do survellience without creating nuisance for citizens.

  2. Deepa, I don’t see how prohibiting games / children playing is a security measure!

  3. These signboards are just one of the many baffling aspects of the parks/gardens that dot Bangalore’s cityscape. I used to work with a design firm based out of Langford Garden and that gave me the benefit of ‘walking past’ Richmond Garden very often. I could never stroll through or visit the garden as it was officially shut down during the day hours!!!
The only good thing that this did was that the ragpickers and street kids could jump the fence and make it their own private garden.

  4. But the very fact that these gardens exist in the city is such a relief. The mornings at Lalbaugh are beautiful.
