Campaigning in the times of technology

Gone are the days of one rupee rice and free saris – now is the time of ecampaigning… so this – Congress to set up Internet kiosks across India to attract youth and this – BJP promises free mobiles to poor, broadband for all at INR 200

Good idea. Then you can call your local legislator from your mobile phone or email him using high speed broadband connectivity about the fact that you do not have drinking water. Oh, hang on, there is no power, so the emailing will have to wait for another day.

  1. But we should definitely appreciate that the thought process has atleast improved. If they really did say that, its interesting. There is a difference between giving rice and establishing internet centers. Its similar to the “I will give you 2 fish daily” vs “I will teach you fishing argument” in a crude way.

Though yes, they wont implement it and it would be a pipe dream is a different issue. But if implemented, it would have far better effects than giving rice.

  2. Promises are all hollow. They have only a notional value. Nothing matters unless it turns real; whether it be internet, mobile, rice or power.
